Status of Free Gaza "Spirit of Humanity" Boat and Sailors

So yesterday Huwaida Arraf, one of the founders of the Free Gaza Movement, showed up to Ramallah and our student delegation meeting. She informed us that 2 civilians (the Israeli citizens) of the 21 civilians on the Spirit of Humanity aid boat were released, and the other 19 are awaiting deportation to their national origins in Israel’s Ben Gurion Prison.

Here’s a brief summary of events, as narrated by Huwaida, about Israel’s arrest of the Spirit of Humanity sailors.

  • On Monday, June 29th, the Spirit of Humanity sailed from Cyprus for Gaza.
  • About half way to their destination the Israeli Navy radio’ed the boat and informed them that they were entering Israeli waters.
  • The captain responded and informed the navy that these were international waters and that the sailors were unarmed civilians and the boat only contained humanitarian aid and toys for children.
  • After several interactions, the Israeli Navy gave a final warning that if they do not turn around they would open fire.
  • Final response: if you open fire you will be killing innocent civilians.
  • The Israeli Navy then jammed their radio signals, as the boat made its final contact to the United Nations (channel 16) to call for help. Final words: “They’re about to come on board, they’re about to come on board.” Then the line went dead.
  • Once they reached almost 20 miles away from Gaza, nearly 5-6 Israeli Navy ships surrounded their ship.
  • As they approached, Huwaida’s husband and other cameramen held up their cameras to record the entire scene. The navy immediately approached their boat, heavily armed commandos with black masks covering their faces jumped onto the boat and tossed their camera’s and arrested (hand cuffed) every civilian on board.
  • Their boat was then immediately sailed to Ashdod and impounded. Greek flag ripped off the boat to prevent photos of Israel towing a Greek boat into port.
  • 19 civilians await deportation and 2 civilians (Israeli citizens: Huwaida and Lubna) were released.
  • They plan to try to sail again.
